On Sunday, the president of the United States of America , Donald Trump, described a recent Russian attack against Ukraine as terrible. Speaking to reporters as he boarded the Air Force heading back to Washington DC, Trump stated that the attack on Sumy which reportedly killed thirty-four persons was a terrible thing.

This statement is in response to the recent Russian strike on Sumy, Ukraine, which occurred on Sunday, April 13, 2025. The attack which occurred at 10:20 a.m. was carried out using two Iskander-M ballistic missiles that targeted the city center during Palm Sunday observances. The strike which was regarded as the deadliest assault on the civilian Ukrainians since 2023 led to the death of at least 34 civilians, including two children, and left 117 persons injured.

The controversial leader also noted that he was informed that the attack was a mistake, but for him, the entire war was a horrible thing. When asked to clear the air on what he meant by the attack being a mistake, Trump simply observed that the attackers said it was a mistake, hence the question of clarification should be directed to them.

On the other hand, the leaders at the American National Security Council have observed that the attack was another urgent reminder why Donald Trump’s persistence efforts on ending the war are well timed.

Both President Trump and the White House have not mentioned Moscow as the attacker. However, the US Secretary of State sympathised with the victims of the Sunday morning attack

Meanwhile, it is important to note that the Russian missile strike occurred two days after Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, went to Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin and further mentioned President Trump’s desire to end the war.

Also, the Ukrainian President has pleaded that Donald Trump should pay a visit to Ukraine and see the destruction caused by the Russian strike. Zelensky also added that before any negotiation or decision is reached, President Trump need to come and see the dead persons, the injured people, the destroyed hospital, churches, children injured and dead.
