The former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has asserted that the Rivers’ state of emergency is tied to what may befall some governors in the 2027 election.

In an interview with Arise TV’s Prime Time on the 1st of April, Peter Obi agreed with the interviewer who quoted Rotimi Amaechi, saying that the State of emergency in Rivers State is a threat to the governors in relation to the 2027 election. Obi concurred, saying: “I believe so, that is what he is trying to do.”

According to the interviewer, the former River State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, stated some days ago, that the declaration of the state of emergency by the President is a tactic by President Tinubu to intimidate governors who might not support him in the 2027 election, the interviewer asked Peter Obi if he subscribes to that school of thought. To this, Obi responded by saying: ”For me, what happened in Rivers is very unfortunate and it is impacting very negatively on the little incline of democratic space we had. As for intimidating the governors for 2027, it shouldn’t be. The governors are going to seek re-election, you are going to seek re-election. You are going to seek re-election based on what you have been able to do. It is part of what I told you, that he is trying to intimidate the governors.”

In response to this assertion, Mr. Charles, the interviewer asked, “So you believe it’s what he is trying to do?” To this Obi responded, “But that is what I am trying to tell you.”

Again, to further clarify his school of thought on the Rivers’ State of emergency, the interviewer asked, “But is it what he is trying to do?” and Obi stated, ‘I believe so. I believe so.”

Obi, who is known for being vocal about political and non-political issues, had joined other prominent and well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the action carried out in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In his interview with Prime Time on Arise TV, he announced that he also had issues with his successor, but the state is bigger than him. He asserted that Fubara was elected and sworn in; he should be allowed to rule.
