Controversial Islamic scholar and activist, Sheikh Gumi has declared that he supports president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s controversial tax reform bill.
Amid opposition to the bill by some governors across the six geographical zones of the federation and particularly northern governors and politicians over claim that the bill if passed into law will deepen poverty in states with less commercial and economic activities as Lagos, Sheikh Gumi has now endorsed the bill and described it as a good package.
However, the Islamic scholar expressed concern over the part of the bill that aims to reform the VAT already in place in the country. He suggested that the proponents of the bill as well as the national assembly reviews the part that aims to reform the VAT system.
He said: “I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”
